George Birrell is inspired by the fishing villages of Fife and the strong Scottish architecture of the tower houses. In these he finds a never-ending source of images which he captures in oils. His vigorous brush stokes explore a play in perspectives and his use of colour creates a unique interpretation. George Birrell trained at the Glasgow School of Art and started painting full time in 1998 after a career as a lecturer and teacher in art and design. He is a frequent contributor to The Scotttish Societies including the Royal Academy. He is interested in the architecture of the East Coast towns and the fishing villages of Scotland. Vigorous handling and strong design are a hallmark of his painting.
Born 1949, George studied art at
Glasgow School of Art from 1967 - 1971. He taught
art until 1985, but is now a full time painter and
lecturer. He has had many one man shows where his
work, which he describes as "The Scottish landscape
in a celebration of light and colour", is always
in demand
